The Italian designer and architect Paolo Rizzatto was born in Milan in 1941. He graduated in architecture at the Milan Polytechnic in 1965 and he began to work for Arteluce. In 1968 he opened his own practice. At the beginning of his career he mainly in the architectural and design fields. Among his most famous architectural works, we’d like to mention: a day nursery in Segrate (1972), a detached holiday home in Formentera (1972), a residential neighborhood in Feltre (1973), a suburban villa in Bazzano (1976) and a retirement home in Novara (1986). Afterwards Rizzatto decided to experience the lighting design world: 1978 he founded Luceplan with Riccardo Sarfatti. With the “265” lamp collection, for the first time Rizzato’s work was in the limelight. This collection has been followed by “Berenice”, the table lamp made of glass, aluminium and plastic and the “Titania” hanging lamp, which looks like a submarine. But Rizzatto’s creativity didn’t end here: as a matter of fact he became famous also with the creation with the “Dakota” chair and with the “Donald System” bookcase. Among his numerous prizes he had won, we’d like to remember some of them: three “Compasso d’Oro” awards (1981,1989,1994), Design Plus Ambiente in Frankfurt (1992), Product Award Lighting Fair (New York; 1992), Ret Dot Award at Design Innovation in Essen (1994) and the ECDP in Amsterdam (1994). Moreover famous brands such as Luceplan, Arteluce, Alias, Cassina, Joint, Knoll, Nemo and Molteni produces Rizzatto’s works.
