Ettore Sottsass was an important architect and designer in the international and Italian panorama. Born in 1917 from an architect father, Ettore Sottsass graduated in Architectur from Polytechnic University of Turin in 1939, following his father’s example. He opened his own design studio in Milan in 1947 and became immediately the main protagonist in the world of Italian architecture. After adhering to Spatialism, founded by Lucio Fontana in 1950, Ettore Sottsass started to collaborate with the prestigious agency Olivetti in the field of computer design: it is thanks to its project for computer mainframe Elea 9003 that he won his first award Compasso D’Oro in 1959. He won three more in his long career: he won two in 1970 and the last one in 1989 for the cutlery set “Nuova Milano”, designed for Alessi. He received several international awards during his long and successful career: several awards from different art schools all over the world, as well as degrees honoris causa and two honorary titles: Orders of Merit of the Italian Republic and Italian Order of Merit for Culture and Art.
