Karim Rashid is a Canadian designer born in Cairo in 1960. As a baby he moved to Canada, where in 1982 he graduated in Industrial Design
at the Carleton University of Ottawa. He continued his study in the field of design in Italy, in Naples, with Ettore Sottsass and in Milan in the studio of Industrial Design of Rodolfo Bonetto. Back to Canada, in Toronto, he cooperated with KAN Industrial Designers and, in 1983 he opened in New York his professional studio. Some of his clients have been: Giorgio Armani, Magis, Maybelline, CityBank, Tommy Hilfiger, Sony, Villeroy & Boch, Yahoo, Yves Saint Laurent, Zanotta, Guzzini, IMAX, Zeritalia, Totem, Edra, Estée Lauder, Fasem, Flos, George Kovacs, Issey Miyake, Leonardo, Nienkamper, Pure Design.
He has received many awards and rewards, such as the Canadian Design Hero 2001, the Design Effectiveness Gold Award 1999 and 2001, the Daimler Chrysler Award 1999, the George Nelson Award 1999, the Silver IDEA Award 1999, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Collab Award 1999, the Brooklyn Museum of Art Designer 1998.
Karim Rashid is one of the most important creators of culture nowadays. He is a successful designer in the fields of product, interior design, fashion, furniture, art and lighting, famous for his great capacity of describing visually our contemporary culture with his design sensibility. He has designed more than 3000 objects which have been produced and has won more than 300 awards, working in more than 35 countries.
