CLAUS JOSEF RIEDEL

CLAUS JOSEF RIEDEL

Claus Riedel was born in 1925 in Polaun, now part of Kořenov, in Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic), to Walter Riedel, a glassmaker, and Claudia Prollius Riedel. He served in the German army in Italy during World War II. After the war, he worked for a short time at Swarowski Crystal and in 1956 he bought with his father a glassworks bankrupt in Kufstein, Austria, recreating a tradition founded initially in Bohemia in 1756. C J Riedel was the first to produce specific glasses for wine, recognizing that the shape of glass affects the taste of wine. In fact, after taking control of the family business in 1957, he began to experience the shapes of wine glasses, recognizing that a wine could have a significantly different flavor in glasses of various shapes and sizes. His designs, which included the 1958 Burgundy Grand Cru, then the world’s largest wine glass, won the Grand Prix at the Brussels Exposition that year. His son, Georg succeeded him as president of the company by, in 1994. He died in March 2004, aged 79.
